Up for t’cup again... after 169 years
The Tom Marsden Cup
...AND that’s not the only sporting festival being launched this year...
Regular Diary readers may remember the newly reformed Wednesday Cricket Club were looking to bring the Tom Marsden Trophy back into use.
That’s the cup presented to the team’s 19th Century superstar who hit 1,724 runs and took 97 wickets in his first class career. It is currently displayed at Sheffield Town Hall after being bequeathed to the city upon the 38-year-old’s sudden death in 1843.
Now club directors have announced plans to hold an annual Bank Holiday cricket festival where invited teams from across the city gather.Funds raised will be divided between the clubs and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
“We want it to be a real carnival,” says club chairman Neville Wright. “Of course the sport is important but it’s also about celebrating the city’s history and community. There will also be plenty of entertainment, like face painting and raffles.
“Initially, we’ll make it a four-team competition with limited overs matches but it could expand.”
A plinth is being made for the cup, on which the winning team will be inscribed each year. The Lord Mayor will be asked to present the trophy.
This year’s inaugural festival will take place on Monday, June 4, at Thorncliffe Cricket Club’s Chapeltown ground, times and teams to be confirmed.
