SHOPPERS enjoyed a touch of brass as they browsed the aisles at a Sheffield supermarket when a city ensemble paid a visit.
The S13 Brass Ensemble gathered in the foyer at the Asda store in Handsworth, playing a selection of traditional tunes for passers-by.
The band, which practises in Handsworth, also collected plenty of donations from shoppers.
The ensemble was formed in 1981 by founder and conductor Norman Cawkwell, and plays a number of different styles from hymns to classical brass music and versions of chart hits.
Members’ ages range from eight to 80 years old, and the group also has facilities to teach youngsters aged nine and upwards.
The band teams up with a German group every four years and also plays at weddings, birthday parties and military events.

sheffield f.c. world club champions
Monday, December 26, 2011 at 11:48 AMDinnington Colliery band always play outside the Tesco in Dinnington, previously to that it was the Co-op in Dinnington. It was nice to see them getting promoted on their own TV show and getting to number 2 in the Classic FM charts. I understand that even Handsworth had a pit once.
