Get fitter faster as gym revamped

Students at Sheffield Hallam University will be getting fitter and faster due to a £2 million refurbishment of the Collegiate Crescent gym.

Many of the new features will include an extension of the fitness suite, better strength and conditioning facilities and a physiotherapy suite. Work will also be done to improve the changing facilities, toilets and the small gym.

Life Fitness, an established name in supplying gym equipment will be providing all the new equipment.

The gym closed on March 20th and will re-open in October 2008. It will be extended to two storey floors that will extend into the nearby court yard.

The re-make is the first on this scale for the campus gym after minor work was done in 2004.

Miss Sophie Turner, administrator at Sport Hallam, said plans for the launch were still in the pipeline.

Miss Turner said: "'Although the refurbishment has caused some disruptions to our members, there's been a positive reaction as in the long term the Pearson Building will be vastly improved. People realised that it needed to happen."

Fay Whittaker, a student at the University who uses the Collegiate gym regularly, said: "If it's for a new gym I'm all for it. It won't affect my fitness regime much because I'll just go to city gym."

The City Campus gym will receive new equipment but will not be closed.

Staff who work at the Collegiate facility will be transferring to the City Campus whilst senior members of the personnel will be staying to help with the administration duties.
