ST LUKE’S Hospice Starlight Walk is back - and this time it’s even bigger and better!

The hospice’s first sponsored 5km walk last year attracted almost 1,000 people and raised an impressive £65,000.

For the 2012 event, the St Luke’s team are hoping that even more people will march from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam and back – and they are set on raising more than £80,000.

St Luke’s, which was Britain’s first hospice outside London when it was set up 41 years ago, needs to raise £4 million a year to run its service for terminally-ill people.

The charity touches the lives of 1,500 patients a year, in every part of Sheffield, making their lives more comfortable in their final days, whether in their own home or at the hospice in Whirlow.

The 2012 Starlight Walk, which again is backed by The Star, will be held on Saturday, May 12, and will include live music, entertainment and a fun group warm up for all walkers in Endcliffe Park.

This year will also see the start of a special 2km Mini Stars Walk, specifically created for St Luke’s youngest supporters.

St Luke’s events fundraising manager Anna Sheppard said: “The Starlight Walk is not at all tough - but it is very rewarding. It is also the biggest and most inclusive sponsored walk in Sheffield, created specially for the charity that supports the whole of the city.

“It’s a beautiful 5km walk from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam and back through parks and woodland, on paths and hard surfaces, with only very gentle gradients. The route will be marshalled all the way and well lit so there’s no chance of getting lost.

“The entry fee helps us to cover the cost of organising the event but it’s the sponsorship raised by the walkers that will make all the difference to our patients and their families. So please raise as much as you can to help us - we are asking every walker to try to raise a minimum of £70 in sponsorship.

The walk starts at sunset at 8.45pm but entertainment in Endcliffe Park begins from 4pm, kicking off with the new 2k Mini Stars event, created specially for four to eight-year-olds - a fun introduction to supporting charity.

Anna added: “As an incentive, anyone who raises more than £85 wins an exclusive St Luke’s mug, £150 will win a Starlight Walk 2012 gym bag and there’s a fantastic prize for the top individual fundraiser - an Apple iPod!

“It’s going to be a wonderful night to remember. It’s a fabulous way of supporting St Luke’s and a great way of celebrating the life of a loved one.”

n Registration costs £15 per person or £10 per person for groups of six or more, while young people aged five to 15 can take part for £10. The Mini Stars event costs £5 per child. The closing date for entries is Friday May 4. For further information call 0114 235 7594, email eventinfo@hospicesheffield.co.uk or visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk.
