Bahamas wedding prize for veg love story film-makers - WATCH VIDEO

Waiting for Video...

CARROTS, cucumbers, action! Doncaster couple Adele Freeman and John Applin have turned a selection of their favourite vegetables into a prize winning movie.

The pair, who both work at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, put together a 60-second film about how they met and fell in love.

And officials on a Caribbean island were so impressed with the result that they have invited the pair, from Balby, to get married there later this year.

Adele, who works in the clinical coding department at the hospital, made the film after hearing about a competition for free weddings run by the Bahamas tourist office, asking people to send in their photos and videos.

She went one step further with her own short film - featuring herself depicted by a smartly dressed carrot, and John as a stylish cucumber, taking part in a ceremony officiated by a leek in formal attire.

The people from the Bahamas were impressed enough to invite the couple to stay on the islands for an all-expenses-paid wedding this spring.

Adele, aged 30, made the models and John, 31, edited the film, shot on his portable camera.

Adele said: “The idea of making a film with the vegetables popped into my head as I was doing the washing up.

“I rushed out to the craft shop and bought some felt, card, foam, vegatables, some stick-on boggly eyes, pipe cleaners, glue and scissors, plus some sand.

“It was a lot of hard work to make the clothes and the scenery - it took me pretty much a weekend to do the whole thing, and it made a minute of film in the end!

“But I’d never made a film before, so I’m delighted with the results. I’d heard of storyboards, so I made some of those, with pictures on them.”

The process taught her all about the modelling qualities of popular vegetables, too...

She said: “John was originally going to be a potato - but it was too hard to make clothes for a potato. And also, he kept falling down!”

The film tells how John proposed to Adele in 2010, in their hotel during a holiday in Turkey. But in the great Hollywood tradition poetic licence allows a change to the true story, with the proposal switched to a beach location.

Adele said: “The film took a long time, but it was great fun to do.

“I have a lot of sympathy for Steven Spielberg - it is hard work making a film. But it was well worth the rewards.”

The couple will be exchanging vows at the Augustinian cloister in the Bahamas. Adele and John and two guests will be staying at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island.
