Rally over legal aid cuts

SHEFFIELD politicians and lawyers are planning to attend a demonstration in the city centre over Government plans to cut the amount of free legal aid available to clients.

A rally is to be held outside the Town Hall on Friday, June 3, between 5 and 6pm as part of a day of action aimed at demonstrating the level of concern there is at plans to cut legal aid.

MP David Blunkett is among those due to attend, alongside a number of solicitors from across the city.

Under Government plans, free legal advice would be abolished for problems with employment, welfare benefits, family law, immigration and consumer problems, as well as most debt and housing advice.

It is currently available to people on low incomes at Citizens Advice Bureaux, independent advice centres, the Law Centre and private practice solicitors.

Carita Thomas, of Young Legal Aid Lawyers, said: “Legal aid is a safety net for the most vulnerable.”
