Memories of a happy childhood
How school has changed, in my day receiving the cane was like having a bottle of milk - you would get both free every day, sometimes even one on account.
Ellesmere J/I in the school yard where I played out the 1954 world cup as a young Brazilian named Pele.
In the toilets smoking my first ciggy at 7 years old.
Had my first feelings for a young pretty girl with pigtails Maggie Wood.
After school going swimming to Sutherland Road Baths. Every Saturday morning coming out and crossing the road for a penny loaf pulling the white inner out and eating it while still hot.
Catching the tram free to Firth Park and the Parragan Picture house to see the serials where the hero always rescued the female in distress.
Watching the Disney cartoons before the film disintegrated and a crescendo of "put a shilling" in seemed to do the trick.
We would sing along to the song "We come along on Saturday mornings".
We were entertained as we would watch competitions on stage. One week my brother won the yo-yo competition and was given a brand new yo-yo.
How proud was I.
