News In Brief: Trio escape after blaze in attic

TWO adults and a teenage girl escaped unharmed when a fire broke out in the attic of their Sheffield home.

The trio evacuated after discovering the blaze at the house on Owler Lane, Firth Park.

Three fire engines were deployed to the fire from Darnall and one from Elm Lane.

When crews arrived the family were all safely out, but firefighters had to enter the burning building wearing breathing apparatus.

Anger at ‘ambush’

SHEFFIELD Central MP Paul Blomfield has criticised Conservative rivals for opposing the appointment of an academic to oversee efforts to ensure ‘fair access’ to higher education.

The Labour politician, a member of the House of Commons’ business select committee member, has called the attempt to block University of Bedfordshire Vice-Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon from being installed as Director of the Office for Fair Access ‘a political ambush’.

Car lot fire drama

FIRE crews were called to the Carr Motors car lot in Shalesmoor, Sheffield, after smoke was spotted drifting from the office. When firefighters arrived they found an electric heater had been left switched on and a chair leg was resting against it.

Machinery alight

Firefighters dealt with a blaze at a magnesium sheet cutting business on the Brooklands Business Park, Attercliffe, Sheffield, after machinery caught fire. They spent around an hour dealing with the incident at noon on Wednesday.

Cannabis plants

TWENTY cannabis plants were discovered growing in a house during a police raid. Officers arrested two men, aged 25 and 31, and a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of the production of cannabis at the property on Heywood Street, Brimington. They have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Arsonists strike

A RECYCLING wheelie bin was set alight outside Morrisons supermarket on Bawtry Road, Bramley, Rotherham. Firefighters were called at 9pm on Wednesday. A Peugeot 406 was destroyed in an arson attack on Ellesmere Road, Burngreave, Sheffield.
