MP plea over band ‘snub’

A SOUTH Yorkshire MP has contacted European football’s governing body protesting about a decision to exclude Grimethorpe Colliery Band from playing on the Wembley pitch at the forthcoming Champions League final.

The band had been invited to the match between Manchester United and Barcelona on Saturday, May 28, and assumed they were going to be playing on the pitch - to be told they were only being invited to play outside.

Michael Dugher, Barnsley East MP and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Brass Bands, has written to UEFA President Michel Platini criticising the snub and asking for the band to be invited to play inside the stadium.

He said: “It seems like these European executives at UEFA haven’t got a clue.

“The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is world renowned and to ask these great musicians to busk outside the stadium while fans wander past is a real insult to this great British institution. It is a spectacular own-goal by UEFA.”
