Marshals ready for Mardi Gras
BARNSLEY is to get a taste of Rio for a Mardi Gras festival on Saturday.
Pubs, clubs and businesses will be decked out for the carnival, with fire eaters, stilt walkers, street magicians and samba bands trying to recreate a carnival atmosphere.
To cope with the influx of revellers expected in the town, taxi marshals will be operating at the New Street and Midland Street ranks to help people get home safely.
Councillor Charles Wraith, chairman of the council’s general licensing board, said: “We had feedback from members of the public that the marshal service was appreciated over Christmas and New Year, so I’m pleased funding has been secured for them to attend the Mardi Gras event.
“I hope it will encourage more people to have a great night out and a safe journey home.”
