Write to MEPs on animal research

THE respected animal-protection society Animal Aid reports that MEPs in full session are revising their "Directive" ( i.e. law ) on animal research next week.

This is a rare chance to reduce the number of animals in all European labs and limit their suffering, and it may not recur for decades.

The Euro Commission has suggested some reforms, but shamefully, the MEPs in the influential Agriculture Committee don`t want them. Instead of reforms they have recommended looser controls and more suffering, including allowing severe and prolonged pain !

And that is despite the opinion-polls* and despite the glittering promise of the many modern non-animal techniques now available or in advanced development.

Those readers who care about animal suffering may like to seize this moment to write to one or more of our own MEPs, asking them to support the Commission`s original proposals. Animal Aid says it`s best to write to them at Euro Parliament, Palais de l`Europe, Strasbourg, Cedex 67006, France. I`m afraid the stamp costs 56p.

The names are:

Mrs Linda McAvan, Mr Timothy Kirkhope, Mrs Diana Wallis, Mr Godfrey Bloom, Mr Richard Corbett and Mr Edward McMillan-Scott.

Mike Maas, Bingley Seat, Woodbank Road, Rivelin
