Wildlife laws under attack
Yet again The Star has the sad duty of reporting that a gamekeeper stands accused of wildlife crime.
The prosecution states that a pigeon was used as live bait to trap a sparrowhawk, a protected species. Charges include causing suffering to a pigeon, a pheasant and a carrion crow, contrary to the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
We learn that the Wildlife and Countryside Acts, the UK Climate Change Act, National Parks Act and Clean Air Act, are in danger of being abolished by the coalition Government, who labelled these laws ‘red tape’.
It is left to the likes of 38 Degrees and the RSPB to organise internet petitions against these proposals. I advise anyone with an interest in protecting wildlife, climate, clean air and national parks, to use these petitions as well as contacting their MP to register disapproval.
