Why waste all this money?

HOW dare Michael Gove suggest that taxpayers pay for a new royal yacht for the Queen?

If the Government has all these millions to waste on a ship, then it should be put to better use, like making sure OAPs can afford to heat their homes and improving the NHS. The Tories are out of touch with the public.

Jayne Grayson

Michael Gove wants us to fund a new yacht for the Queen. I thought we were broke, but it seems that if the Tories or the Queen want owt then we have loads of money.

Confusion over Occupy protest

Why do you keep describing the Occupy Sheffield protesters as anti-capitalist ?

None of our literature and flyers use this term. Had you troubled to speak to any of the protesters you would be aware this is not the case.

Sweeping generalisations of this kind, especially if inaccurate, can cause confusion with people seeking to understand the reason for the protest.

Charles Schofield

I cannot understand why Occupy Sheffield are allowed to camp anywhere they want, especially on private property.

Do they work? If they’re on benefits their money should be stopped unless they are out every day job hunting.

A fishy story

How about this - a senior citizen’s joke of the year: picture pall bearers carrying a coffin down a path to church, on top of the coffin were fishing rods, tackle, keep net. By-stander to pall bearer: “I’ll bet he was a keen fisherman.” Pall bearer replied: “ He still is, he’ll be down at river as soon as we bury his wife.”

Keep statue

The steelmen’s statues should be put back inside Meadowhall in a prominent position, where they belong.

What people seem to forget is that the old R.Y. Britannia, when not being used by the Royals, was a serving Royal Navy Ship that within a few hours could be stripped out and converted to a hospital ship, complete with operating theatres and the whole works....seems to me if the new ship had the same purpose, it is a good example of cost effectiveness and dual purpose.

Nice rant Jane, shame about the facts....................as usual. Gove didn't suggest tax payers pay a penny. He suggested a fund for people and businesses to voluntarily contribute into to get her Maj a new boat. Give it up luv, nobody wants your brand of loonacy any more. We've had it with you socialist spendaholics for generations to come.

I can't understand all the fuss about having to go to court to get rid of the campers outside the Cathedral. As I understand it, there were numerous times when the tents and the site were totally empty overnight, why then didn't the CouncilPolice etc. just clear the site as abandoned rubbish, if necessary putting all the stuff into lost property to be claimed within a fixed time? Simples eek!

Michael Gove is the most impressive Scottish parliamentarian that we've had in the House of Commons for a few years. Unfortunately, that's not much of an endorsement. Still, thankful for small mercies.

Has this any connection with...'Future Ship Project for the 21st Century( FSP21) which has been on the rounds for a few years and is seeking to raise , from private finance, £80 million to build a ship which would double for scientific research and also have some facilities for the Royals?...Certainly, a Ltd company has been formed and pledges of finance made. The project has also received the backing of, amongst others, Edexcel and the British Antarctic Survey

I think that Michael Gove is trying to win the "Gordon Brown Biggest Waste o' Money Award" with his suggestions and using the public purse to fund such things as issuing bibles. But I don't think he is really a contender until he wastes around £5 billion or so.:)
