This mission statement a proven fallacy

MY local football club has been in existence for 10 years. For the first nine, pre-season training was at High Storrs School, until a resident complained about parking opposite his house. Last year we trained at Endcliffe Park but it is not flat and is potentially dangerous.

So, we had a dilemma of where to train. The answer was the field at King Edward's, which has a decent surface and good location. We had been using it for five weeks, until we were told we had to book the field and pay!

I could understand if we used the gym or artificial pitches but all we use is part of the open space. The grass has not been cut since we started using it so they don't even maintain it.

Running a football team is expensive. We have no sponsor and rely on subscriptions and fund raising. But this is a matter of principle, not cost.

I cannot for the life of me understand how you can charge for an area like this!

Last night, a chap was kicking a rugby ball, teenagers were rolling down the slope and many people walked dogs. Do they book? Yet because we are an organised group, we are expected to pay. An absolute disgrace. We are not the only team affected. I predict the area will now go largely unused.

I believe this area is run by Interserve on a PFI basis (cheers Labour). They state: "We encourage the building to be actively used as a community building, encouraging evening and weekend opening for community activities. When a facility is run efficiently, offering attractive amenities, it draws in people from the local community...

becoming a centre for activities and social interaction."

This 'mission statement' is a proven fallacy.
