Thanks for aid to earthquake area

THE Sheffield and District Chinese Association would like to say a big Thank You for the warm contributions from the community to our Sichuan Earthquake Appeal.

The magnitude-eight earthquake struck the Sichuan Province at 2.28pm on May 12. The death toll has now nearly reached 70,000 including thousands of pupils who were buried as their schools collapsed around them as they attended their daily lessons.

Millions have been left homeless and continue to sleep on the street on blankets in fear of aftershocks. Even more people have had to be evacuated because of further threat to lives from lakes which have formed as a result of the earthquake.

On Saturday, May 24, in co-operation with the Red Cross, we carried out a collection outside the Town Hall and along Pinstone Street. More than 60 volunteers gave their time to help with the collection.

We greatly appreciate the generous donations from the Sheffield community. Together we raised 2,977.49. Of this, 1,280.34 was given to the Red Cross. The remaining 1697.15 was coupled with donations made to our collections within the local Chinese community and members of our association to make a total of 8,500 which we paid to the Chinese Consulate General's Earthquake Relief Fund.

These kind donations will be greatly appreciated by the victims of the earthquake and those working to relieve their suffering.

And on their behalf, we would like to thank them.

Sai Lee, Secretary of Sheffield & District Chinese Association
