Show was electrifying
CAN I offer a special thank you message to all the enchanting children at Vaughan Dance Academy, who put on such a terrific show at the Bawtry Theatre on Sunday.
I have seen many a dancing show at the Civic in my time, but I have to say, this one tops all of them.
The thing that struck me the most was the variety of dance styles and the wonderful selection of music. One minute a rousing marching band, into songs from the musicals, then jazz, pop tunes, sweeping ballet waltzes, going from punchy rhythms to sensitive and poignant so seamlessly that there was never a dull moment. The costumes were beautiful, and they really complemented the music and the dancing well, and there was an exciting array of props on show. The grand finale was really the highlight of the evening and a marvellous production on its own. It completely took my breath away as the audience were on their feet, clapping, stamping and cheering for more and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. I should mention that there were more than a few tears of happiness too, my own included.
The dancers were, above all, a delightful set of children, clearly with some real characters and stars of the future among the ranks. Many of them have only been learning to dance for a very short time I understand, which is really quite astonishing considering how well they danced and how well rehearsed they all were.
Their sheer enthusiasm and joy of dancing was utterly infectious and had you wanting to dance along with them. The routines really showed them off at their best, with lots of patterns and beautifully performed dance steps. I particularly enjoyed the very traditional ballet routines which were a real treat, with some of the best pointed feet I have ever seen.
I would specifically like to say how pleasing it was to see the older children so clearly enjoying what they were doing. Teenagers seem to get such bad press these days and it was really lovely to see these young women and the young man giving their all on the theatre stage.
Finally, I must confess that I had never heard of this dancing school before seeing this show, although they are apparently a relatively new school. Having said that, if this show is anything to go by, these children have a great future ahead of them. Congratulations to all concerned on a truly sensational, slick and professional show.

WALKING through the Winter Garden recently, it was great to be entertained by a group of well-rehearsed, enthusiastic school children singing delightfully.
Less delightful was the group of four adults standing between them and the audience, backs turned to the children, totally ignoring the singing while they talked to each other. I was astonished to learn from another adult present that the four people displaying such awful manners were the children's teachers. What hope is there that today's children will grow into well-mannered, caring adults?
