Ridiculous theories on our charity

As an employee of Common Purpose based in Sheffield, I would like to clarify some of the points in Martin Brighton's letter ("Influential - and pretty common", March 2). The assertion that Sheffield Council is 'increasingly influenced' by Common Purpose is untrue.

We are an independent international organisation that has been running leadership courses for over 20 years. One of the unique features of our courses is that they mix an equal balance of people from different sectors.

Individuals apply to take part in our courses and our application process is clearly outlined on our website.

It is not compulsory for members of the education department or headteachers to take part in our courses. Common Purpose is one of many training providers used by the public, private and third sectors.

We welcome applications from anyone who holds a leadership position and wants to develop their skills. This could be anything from a voluntary position to a public sector role to the CEO of a company.

Organisations and individuals that have taken part in Common Purpose courses tell us that they deliver value and benefit, both to their own development and that of their staff.

I would re-iterate the fact that we are an independent organisation and a registered charity and proud of this. Our Chair of Trustees recently issued a statement addressing some of the ridiculous theories about Common Purpose which can be read on our website at: www.commonpurpose.org.uk
