Residents have a right to be heard

I AM writing in response to the Green Party letter on the proposal for a multi-storey car park at the Hallamshire Hospital (Aug 7).

Coun Little is correct to point out that his proposal was voted down. That's because the Greens wanted the council to make up its mind on the plans without any form of consultation with the local people affected.

I don't believe it's correct or proper to force your views on people without asking them what they want first. The Greens' stance is particularly dictatorial when you consider that they don't even represent the local people affected.

As one of the local councillors for Broomhill I believe that it's vital we ask local people their opinion before we make up our mind on an issue as important as this.

There are significant parking problems in the area which is an issue for both local residents and hospital visitors. That's why we currently have a residents parking scheme. However, any new proposal to deal with the problem must get the balance right.

Clearly the proposal for a multi-storey raises a number of questions. What would be the effect on levels of traffic and the local road network? What would be the impact on Broomhill as a conservation area? What are the alternatives? I for one will be asking for the answers.

However, unlike the Greens I will also be canvassing the opinion of local residents to see what they think too.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Broomhill Ward
