Pensioners fighting a losing battle
I HAVE often wondered why I am not in receipt of carer's allowance. I am 85-years-old and am looked after by my daughter, full-time. I can't do anything by myself and have to rely on her 100 per cent for shopping, cleaning and personal care. I applied for it and was told yes, but it was deducted from my pension. Why? Because she has turned 60 and it is classed as income. I had to fight (or she did) to have it put back on my pension.
This took weeks before it was sorted. So, no
carer's allowance.
Believe me, I could not care for myself without her.
The next step would be to go into a care home. This is my last wish until absolutely desperate. Can she turn her back on me? Of course not. We have a strong bond. Surely it would be cheaper to have her care and love at home, rightly so. People who need help most get no help at all.
It is time the Government looked into this for the many elderly who are being denied the care they need.
Are we fighting a losing battle for what few years we have left? I am sure we are; there is nothing to get old for.
