Pay to replace towers
MAY I put a proposal for consideration over the Tinsley cooling towers?
If the general population of the area want to replace them, then public subscription is surely the only way to pay for it. I for one would be mightily dischuffed if any money is given to such a useless scheme by any organisation that is using taxpayers' money, be it Council, Government or European funding.
In my opinion Mr Caborn unfortunately mirrors the attitude of so many people who get on the celebrity circuit, and cannot see that the finest compliment that can be paid to the area is that its hospitals have what they need, as do the schools etc, not some edifice that is of no practical use whatsoever.

the twin towers at Tinsley are to be demolished why do they have to be replaced by another useless man-made monstrosity?
What is wrong with re-planting wild flowers and trees in the area. I am sure this would encourage wildlife and be a lot more pleasing to look at. I would think this would also be a lot cheaper than some stupid globe which I expect would cost thousands. Sheffield was built in a forest, let us return at least a little bit of land back to nature.

Caborn's intervention appears to be a blatant attempt to promote the England 2018 World Cup bid while FIFA President Sepp Blatter is in town.
There was a collective silence from the council and local MPs when possible funding was available to save the cooling towers.
Now that demolition is certain, they want to take control of the aftermath. We can only hope that the design competition will produce public art that compensates in some small way for the huge loss of the towers to our community.

Angel of the North is an ugly waste of money. It is a road hazard as it distracts drivers. We don't need any more distractions. If this globe is visible from the M1 the motorway will have to be closed when the sun shines.

Caborn has come up with a great idea. It would be a landmark icon for all travellers on the M1 (where the cooling towers are now).
Why do we need to involve an artist at more expense? It doesn't need a competition this would do fine.

Caborn's proposal for raising a football-shaped Angel of the North-type icon on the site of the Tinsley Towers is naff, tasteless and entirely inappropriate.
It is scarcely surprising that this asinine suggestion should emanate from precisely the same quarters as the similarly dull-witted proposition to condemn the region to the eternal curse of a regional supercasino.
The Tinsley Towers site is the ideal location for a brilliant, awe-inspiring, spectacular sculptural creation, to become the iconic symbol of the new South Yorkshire.
Standing as it does at the gateway to the region – the very point at which Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield meet, and beside the region’s main motorway – we need an edifice that will provide a graceful link between the region’s industrial past and a dazzling technological future.
To suggest that the customs and traditions of South Yorkshire are best represented by a giant football merely serves to underline precisely the crude and unrefined cultural image we are trying to shake off.
Let’s leave giant footballs to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester, while we search of a more sophisticated icon.
The lattice-worked representation of the Tinsley Towers themselves has in my opinion been far-and-away the best idea put forward so far, but let the people decide.
