Parliament needs another Cromwell
AFTER their disgusting behaviour, our MPs still fail to grasp the extent of the anger that sweeps the country. Maybe they should look out of the Westminster windows and give some thought to a certain bronze statue. For instance, they might contemplate how Oliver Cromwell dealt with such Parliamentary arrogance and corruption.
First, a purge of MPs to limit the backsliding (as happened with Colonel Pride's purge of 1648).
Second, the rod of correction firmly administered to the bloated and conceited Rump of a Parliament that pursues its own selfish agenda (Cromwell sent the Rump packing in 1653).
Third, the dead and decaying sham of representative politics laid to rest once and for all (as Cromwell finally buried the lunatic corpse of the Barebones Parliament also in 1653).
So, the lesson is plain for all to see. Not in Parliament, but lurking in that bronze, glowering figure outside. And the lesson, if public concern is not directly addressed, should follow three simple phases: purge, chastise and then bury. Only then can we expel the poison that is harmful to the system. Only then can we tackle the real problems, such as raging inequality and a lack of justice. Only then can we deal a mortal blow to the corrosive force that threatens the very fabric of our society.
