No plans to build a new primary school
YOUR article 'New school plan as births go up'' (Feb 26) is inaccurate for a number of reasons.
We are not announcing plans to build a primary school in the Pitsmoor and Fir Vale area, and it would be unfair to give readers the impression that this is going ahead.
You report correctly that 6.1million will be used to fund a permanent solution to the needs of the Burngreave and Fir Vale areas, but this in itself is not a commitment to build a new primary school. Neither have we announced plans to close another secondary school, other than the replacement of Myers Grove and Wisewood.
The demographic profile of the city is continually changing and developing and we are committed to meeting the needs of families. However, we have not announced plans of the nature reported in your article, and it would be wrong of us to leave readers with the impression that these developments will take place.
Jonathan Crossley-Holland, Executive Director Children & Young People's Services, Sheffield City Council
n FOOTNOTE: We said a new school ‘could’ open. The future closure of a secondary has been previously confirmed by Mr Crossley-Holland, although details have not yet been announced.
