LIb Dems' £9m programme to get people back to work

I WAS very sorry to hear of the job losses at the Corus steel plants in Stocksbridge and Rotherham.

However I am pleased that Liberal Democrats on the city council have agreed a 9.2m programme to help get local people back into work.

We have prioritised this money, which will pay for a four-year programme to support local jobseekers and help employers to recruit local people.

We understand that people are concerned at the moment about tightening family finances and job losses. This is just one of the actions that the Lib Dems have taken to help local people and businesses.

Coun Colin Ross, Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and Planning

n The loss of so many jobs at Corus Stocksbridge is dreadful news for the hardworking and dedicated employees at the plant.

We should also not forget that these job losses will not only badly affect the families of these employees but will also have a detrimental knock-on effect in the hard-pressed local economy.

I am particularly concerned that Government focuses on two important areas to help support local workers and businesses.

Greater emphasis must be placed on getting credit flowing through the economy again.

Government must act to make sure anyone claiming jobseeker's allowance can retrain immediately instead of making them wait six months.

Spencer Pitfield, Parliamentary Candidate for Penistone & Stocksbridge
