Lib Dems fail to impress

LIKE many other people in Central Sheffield, I have recently received what at first glance looks like a free newspaper, but on closer scrutiny turns out to be a Lib Dem paper, telling us how wonderful the present leader of the council is.

In it, we are told that the Lib Dem administration is greatly improving levels of recycling.

However, I looked in vain for the information that when they were last in power the recycling rate remained at 4% throughout the years 1999-2002. They are right that this figure increased to 27% over the next six years under Labour, but failed to add what level it is now after another two Lib Dem years in office, or even what level they are aiming for over the next year.

If they are doing so well, surely they would have told us!

The paper is correct that hosting the BBC Sports Personality of the Year was a great achievement for Sheffield; however, if the Lib Dems of the day had had their way, Sheffield would not have had the Arena to host it, or the wonderful sports facilities that helped Jessica Ennis on her way to becoming World Champion in her very demanding event.

We also would not have had the tram system, also vehemently opposed by the Lib Dems.

I recently saw their Environment spokesman on television failing to respond to a recent report about the poor air quality in the city.

The reason he was unable to make any positive suggestions as to how to tackle this very serious problem is that his party has always opposed and attacked every initiative by the Labour Party, including the tram, to encourage motorists to leave their cars at home and promote more use of public transport.

So much for their alleged concern for the environment!
