Let's get rid of hateful word Xmas

I HAVE to say how much I hate the use of the word of Xmas instead of Christmas. It is derogatory to the meaning of Christmas (ie the birth of Jesus Christ, not Jesus X).

I also agree with a lady on television the other day when discussing the idea of 'winter lights' instead of Christmas lights. As most people nowadays just see everything at Christmas as Santa Claus time, snow time and present time, as is depicted on nearly every Christmas card, then perhaps that is what they should be.

We create about our faith and country being overrun with foreigners and different faiths but do very little to promote our own Christianity – even at this special time of year. I am not a 'Bible basher' or regular churchgoer but I try to live my life by Christian standards and to me this means celebrating Christmas for the right reason – the birth of Jesus.

Let us get back to some of the old ways of Christmas: the shops should close for at least two days; there should be a nativity scene in the Peace Gardens; and churches should go out to the community to sing carols.

Maybe I am being too idealistic but please let's stop the use of the word Xmas and have more Christmas cards with a Christian theme as opposed to Santas, snowmen, teddy bears and presents.

JUST a few days to go before the turkey population starts to diminish. And my cheeky wife has asked me to stop being so stingy with my cash and spoil her this year.

I took offence at the suggestion that I had been a skinflint in previous years and asked her what she had in mind as a special gift from me.

She went all coy and a little misty-eyed as said she would like something with a few diamonds.

I took her suggestion on-board and went out the following day in search of a suitable gift bearing in mind what the girl had requested. I searched high and low in countless shops and stores and after a good few hours I spotted the perfect item. I can't wait to see the woman's face on Christmas morning when she opens her present.

Call me soppy and sentimental if you want but I have bought my lovely lady a pack of playing cards.

She's worth it.

DRIVING conditions treacherous, airports closed, Eurostar broken down – and yet idiots persist in warbling on about how wonderful is a white Christmas!

HUMBUG!
