Keep local firms in business
In these hard times it’s wonderful to see how small local businesses go out of their way to help a good cause, as when Paul and his family from Costello’s Flooring of Deepcar without hesitation supported Stocksbridge in Bloom by offering them a fantastic raffle prize.
I’m now the proud owner of a new carpet. What a fantastic service from Paul and his team, who moved furniture I couldn’t and put the flooring down while I was at work.
Supporting local causes, especially, businesses, is a way we all can contribute to the survival of our communities and in recognition of the support they have shown to ours I will be recommending Costello’s to everyone I know.
A huge thank you to all the local businesses who support Stocksbridge in Bloom. Let’s do the same for them and shop local to keep our small businesses and community going.

New college
I’m delighted that a new university technical college is to be built in Sheffield, specialising in the local trades of engineering and advanced manufacturing.
I’m proud to have been at the start of this process in September 2010, bringing together universities, colleges and employers. Throughout, I stressed the importance of a prestigious city centre location. I’m thrilled the college will be near Sheffield station and Hallam University at the Porter Brook site.
Hopefully, we will soon see 600 young people benefiting and gaining the skills needed for new jobs. This college is something everyone in Sheffield can celebrate and I’m pleased the Government is investing in our young people.

Terrible policy
I read in disbelief your headline relating to the council allowing an amnesty on overflowing wheelie bins.
This in itself is an admission that fortnightly collections will create an excess of rubbish. What about families where there may be four or five ‘extra’ black sacks? Are we reverting to a situation where some bags will go uncollected (memories of 1973)? This is a terrible policy and should be swiftly averted. Cuts should be made elsewhere.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 03:45 PMI had a pleasant experience today...I went to eat at a newly opened restaurant and, to my total surprise, I ate with cutlery that was "Made in Sheffield".
