I'm appalled by state of Sheffield's buildings
WHEN I saw the proposed design for a new building to be erected on the site of the now demolished Sheaf House and Dyson House I thought, at first, it was someone's idea of a joke.
Unfortunately, I realised the planners were deadly serious and Sheffield was going to be landed with yet another ugly monstrosity of a building.
I should not have been surprised, as nothing erected in recent years could be described as elegant, or pleasing to the eye, and certainly nowhere near the quality of the few remaining architectural gems in our city.

When commentating on the proposed design for the new building, Sheffield Council Chief Executive, Sir Bob Kerslake said: "This is a bold and exciting proposal which would put Sheffield on the map."
I am sure there are few who would agree with his view. It beggars belief that Sheffield has received several awards for recent city centre projects and one can only assume that those giving out the awards have the same bad taste in architecture as Sheffield city council and its planners.
Sadly, all our lovely old buildings, like those under threat in Cambridge and Pinstone Streets, are being demolished, only to be replaced with futuristic glass and concrete boxes. Sheffield city council seems to excel in destroying our history whilst allowing eyesores like the old Roxy nightclub to be refurbished.
That's the kind of building which really needs to be razed to the ground. At Christmas, I received some books on old Sheffield as gifts and was appalled at how many beautiful old buildings we have lost - not all due to Hitler's bombs, but the majority flattened by the bulldozers during the past 50 years. I don't think our soulless council will be happy until all of our city is filled with boring buildings.

Parkway bridge
ARE there no architects in Yorkshire capable of designing a footbridge over the Parkway? I'm sure there are plenty of student architects in Sheffield and Rotherham who could have designed a bridge just as inspiring, and some of the 2m could then be spent on improving the pavements.
