I hope some farmers show compassion

SHOCK, dismay and a great sadness is felt to think the Government has given the go ahead for yet another wholesale slaughter of badgers. Oh how I agree with Justin Kerswell having read his very informative letter (Sep 17).

This all started years ago and one of the main instigators, one professor Krebs (after thousands of badgers were killed) said there was no conclusive evidence to say badgers carried TB and passed it to cattle. Also, could it be the other way round, by cattle urinating in streams and the TB virus passed to other animals. It's been another idea, although again never proven.

It seems in this country not much of an excuse is needed to start getting rid of our wildlife - foxes and badgers being the main targets.

My friends at the High Peak Badger Group and, indeed, any of the groups country-wide do an amazing job looking after these animals when they have been trapped or in a road accident and then rehabilitating them back into the wild.

So it will be particularly upsetting for all these people having worked so hard for many years.

The destruction these animals cause is nothing at the side of what humans cause - as this latest cull and giving farmers the go ahead to kill any on their land will prove.

Perhaps when most of our wildlife has gone, the powers-that-be will be satisfied.

I just hope some of the farmers are compassionate.
