Help the elderly during snow chaos
THE gritting teams are working round the clock, there isn't enough salt and sand for the roads let alone pavements. People around the world are experiencing these conditions.
Moans from individuals don't help, we must all pull together.
A kind neighbour with a 4x4 went round asking if we needed any shopping, and kindly bought in for many of us. We couldn't venture or get out.
Housing officers and residents with 4x4s could do the same everywhere. You know where the elderly, disabled and mothers with small families live. They can't and shouldn't go out.
Help them, call on them to see if they require the essentials, especially the elderly make sure they are warm, have food and are safe.
May I also congratulate our postie, newspaper delivery boys, and everyone who did make an effort.
I wish to condemn the 20 yobs who, when sent home from school, decided to bombard our windows with icy snowballs. When we opened our doors to ask them to stop the 'brave by number' idiots decided to throw them with venom at us.

IF Brandon Jones, First's deputy managing director, thinks the broken down 'Worst' bus was only blocking Furnival Gate for 10 minutes, his watch is as unreliable as his buses. it was nearer 25 minutes.

HAVING reached work at 7:20 this morning, only to be sent home again at 8:15 due to the sudden and severe snowfall, I passed a large number of buses having great difficulty in the snow as I walked home.
I'm usually one of the first to complain about First's disgracefully high fares and often rude drivers, but today the efforts of both First and Stagecoach drivers showed that all those on duty this morning at the very least deserve very sincere praise for the lengths that they went to to keep passengers warm, dry and safe and get them as close to home as possible.
I hope that the bosses at both companies realise what great staff they have and will reward them suitably.

I AM 63 years-old and have seen some bad winters but, may I add, not many over the last few years. When I was a child, with nobody having central heating, everybody seemed to cope much better than today. We used to clear our own fronts of snow or help the elderly if they couldn't do it thus it kept all the footpaths clear. I appreciate the council gritters do a good job, but why are our footpaths over the last few days left untreated. May I suggest that some of the people on Jobseekers Allowance, if capable, could be given an incentive of extra money to salt the footpaths. Special thanks to the staff on the Supertram net work – all their platforms were kept salted. Well done.

WHAT excuse will Sheffield Council and Coun Paul Scriven in particular come up with to tell us why again no gritting was done during the snowfall on Monday evening and Tuesday morning this week despite the Met Office issuing severe weather warning?
As a result, Sheffield was brought to a standstill. I live on a road with not one but two schools at the top, yet as expected no gritters arrived.
Perhaps Coun Scriven will be laughing when he reads this letter or will indeed be laughing when the Lib Dems get voted out of office by the angry residents of Sheffield. It will also be interesting to see what comments are made by our other party leaders, in particular Jan Wilson.
In 2010 this is not laughable but scandalous.
