Growing flesh is a wasteful process
FOR the past few years foreign-aid charities have been asking for money to send cows and other animals to Africa. It's not a good idea. Their lands are devastated by overgrazing due to huge increases in population, and by repeated droughts, which overgrazing helps to promote.
They are perhaps the poorest people on Earth. How can they provide the food and water and veterinary attention which farm animals should get? Surely there'll be continued overgrazing and more pictures on our TVs of carcasses on bare land.
Instead of the wasteful process of growing flesh, which wastes anything from 50 to 90% of the food-value the animal eats (to keep itself alive and moving around) shouldn't donors' money go into water-supply and plant-cultivation to feed people direct?
Animal Aid is supporting an irrigation and tree-planting project in Kenya and recommends similar charities like Food For Life, Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, and HIPPO. If readers would like to try some really non-animal food they should visit Sheffield Animal Friends' free vegan food event at Friends Meeting House tomorrow (Dec 5t), 11 - 3 p.m.
