Gain without the animal pain
On May 22, Sheffield people can take part in an alternative fundraising event for cancer research.
Much of the money they give to medical research charities will be used to fund animal experiments. Over the centuries, medical research has developed a heavy reliance on animals, but today, with exciting fields such as stem cell technology and advanced computer modelling, this needn't be the case.
Proceeds from the Run for ALL Life, in Ecclesall Woods, go to the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, the leading charity funding exclusively non-animal techniques to replace animal experiments, benefiting humans and animals.
Apart from the captivity and suffering, animal experiments often give misleading results that cannot be extrapolated to the human condition. Even different strains of the same species can give a different reaction to drugs. Investment in humane non-animal based research may therefore be the best use of resources and lead to faster medical progress.
There is still time to register. To find out more about the work of the Dr Hadwen Trust and the run, visit www.drhadwentrust.org or email dawn.biram@talktalk.net.
