Fighting for the future of industry
LAST week's announcement that 379 jobs are to go at Corus in Stocksbridge was a huge shock and a tremendous setback for a community that has weathered so much over the years when it comes to the ups and downs of the steel industry.
Our response to this must work on many levels.
First of all, we must ensure that support is available in the town for those who need to find new employment. To this end, I have had discussions with Yorkshire Forward and the Secretary of State responsible for employment services. They will ensure that Rapid Response services are available to those affected by the closure.
Secondly, we must act to help Corus retain the skills base essential if the company is to build profitably when the economic upturn arrives. To this end, I have met with Lord Mandelson to make the case for financial support for skills retention.
Thirdly, we need Yorkshire Forward and Sheffield City Council to do all it can to help Corus reduce its non-employment related costs, so that it can remain competitive and fit for the future. I have held discussions with the Chief Executives of both organizations and am confident they will do all they can in this respect.
I will continue to do all I can to help secure the future for steel in our area.
