Bishops' House a jewel in the crown

IT is so disappointing that, because of what seems to be a lack of interest by the museum service, the Bishops' House Museum is being left as a target for vandals (July 7).

I worked at Bishops' House for over 17 years from late 1980. It was a wonderful place.

At that time, Bishops' Holuse was open five days a week, only closing Monday and Tuesday. Numerous exhibitions were held there, many school parties attended and visitors came from all over the world: USA, France, Canada, Japan and China, to name but a few. The Comments in visitors' books made excellent reading. Local schoolchildren came during December every year and carol concerts were held. The Sealed Knot group came regularly too and their exhibitions were always well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.

Why did this all stop? Was it really necessary to close for most of the week? All it needed was just two dedicated staff members to keep the place in tip-top condition.

Nick Dodd, the chief executive says Bishops' House has low visitor figures. Of course it has, it is only open for two days a week (if staff are not sick). This wonderful, and very important Grade II listed building, should not be left to the vandals. I can remember very well the then head of museums always saying "Bishops' House is our jewel in the crown." How can it become a 'blot on the landscape' so quickl?
