Angling is a cruel pastime
Further to the letter from Stuart Halkon (Sept 21) regarding irresponsible anglers.
A couple of weeks ago I had lunch in Hillsborough Park with a friend and her young son. I was suprised to see so many pigeons just sitting around, getting up for a stride or two then sitting back down. When my friend's son started to put some bread out for these birds, to our horror we noticed that bird after bird had their legs totally strangled by discarded fishing line.
For some of these poor creatures the line had been pulled so tight that their legs and feet were being starved of blood and were nearly falling off.
Bird after bird was suffering from this, we must have counted 20 or more birds that were unable to walk and which had their legs cruelly and painfully entangled in fishing line.
Isn't it time to accept that fishing is an abusive pastime? A pastime that is principally engaged in by people who inflict pain and suffering on harmless creatures and who have no concern for their environment or the people and animals in it.
The memory of the those birds needlessly suffering through the callous irresponsibility of fisherman, quite spoiled our day.
I hope if the RSPCA is reading this, someone will get an inspector down there and try to untangle some of those birds.

Labour owe public an apology
I am writing in response to the comments made by Coun Steve Jones, the Labour politician who used to be in charge of the Council's finances before they lost the election in May. In The Star on September 18 he made a number of claims regarding 'proposed budget cuts' at the Town Hall.
His claim that the Labour administration left the council "in a position of financial strength" is ludicrous given the position we now find ourselves in.
The savings which the Lib Dem group are now trying to make are a direct result of the financial mismanagement of the previous administration.
It beggars belief for Coun Jones to score cheap political points, trying to distance himself from the financial difficulties that he has left local people with. Residents of Sheffield deserve better than that. Coun Jones and the rest of his Labour colleagues owe local people an apology.
Despite Labour's financial mismanagement the Lib Dems are committed to delivering the high quality services that the people of Sheffield expect. But we are also dedicated to giving Sheffield residents good value for money for their council tax, something which we saw precious little of under Labour's administration. We understand that during these times of financial uncertainty, families are under pressure to make ends meet, and we want to help these people, by ensuring that council tax is as low as possible.

Lots of love to Charlie's family
I have just read Jo Davison's article about Charlie Liversidge. I have daughters aged 32, 17 and two and I understand exactly what Charlie's dad says about laying on the sofa and smelling him after his bath.
I can't leave my office at the moment as I am sitting at my desk with tears streaming down my cheeks wondering how I would cope in their position but what a humane thing to do to go and cuddle the man who was driving the car and realising it was a terrible accident.
Thank you Jo for making me realise just how important my children are to me and please if you see these parents again pass on my feelings and love to them.

The throwaway society lives on
We still have an unbelievably wasteful society at domestic level.
Ten days ago I took 86 items of good quality clothing and toys from a skip outside a house on Haugh Lane, near its junction with Bents Lane, Bents Green.
There were 19 tops, 10 pairs of jeans, 18 pairs of trousers, 10 pairs of shorts, a duvet cover, four jackets, 18 soft toys and six pairs of socks.
I took them all to a charity shop in Woodseats.
How do we get the message across to people like this, who clearly have so much, that it is important to recycle their unwanted goods for the benefit of both others and the environment?

Over 65s, enjoy life and join our club
WE are currently looking for members to join our club.
We run a lunch club at Christchurch Hall on Foxhill Road every Wednesday and are in the process of setting up a Thursday group.
We provide a hot meal on Wednesday but our Thursday group will be an activity day so sandwiches and a dessert will be provided.
Members pay a small cost towards this and their transport. Transport is available but spaces are limited. After lunch we have a raffle and bingo and, time permitting, some members like a game of dominoes.
All our members are over 65 years of age but still like to have a bit of fun. During the summer months we have days out or even go to the pub for lunch. The group has even been away on holidays together and we are hoping to go again next year.
I can be contacted at this address and telephone number for more information.

Find somewhere safer for 41 to park
In response to the person complaining about the 41 buses parking, the decision to stop the bus parking in the tram stop was made after a bus hit a motorbike seriously injuring two people. I know this as I was on the bus that day.
I do however agree that where they park now is dangerous.
I think First need to come up with something better and safer for both passengers and car drivers.
