A wee bit of corrosion

IN last Saturday's edition you reproduced a photo showing Tinsley viaduct whilst construction was taking place.

At the time I worked in the immediate area and the photo brought back some very happy memories.

The photo appears to have been taken from behind W T Flathers premises. They were a company of bright steel drawers and like almost all of the East End have long since gone. To the left can be seen Tinsley shops, which included two banks, a post office, Mr Swindells' quite famous, hairdressing "salon" and a chip shop where they still fried on a coal-fired range.

Behind the derrick crane lies a part of Hadfield's steelworks which again has gone to be replaced by Meadowhall.

The unmade lane running from the left, across the lower end of the photo, is Wharf Lane which was built by the Cutlers Company to serve Sheffield canal's original basin. The canal company's original offices can be just made out at the bottom right hand corner. These were added to later by The Tinsley Rolling Mills Co. Ltd (where I worked for quite a few, happy, years).

Their billet yard and fitters shop are to the right, under the viaduct. Alas, that company, also, no longer exists.

The viaduct's huge steel box sections were pushed down a narrow gauge railway which was laid on the top of the structure and extended as the viaduct grew. Upon reaching the end the crane lifted a box section up and they were then bolted onto the structure.

Some years after construction corrosion was noticed. Blame was was laid at the 'feet' of the bridge workers who had used the insides of the boxes as unofficial latrines!
