Saving our historic baths

Re: The Star report, Listed Status Saves Baths (Feb 7).

‘Wrong’ candidate

Med Hughes’s decision to seek Labour’s nomination for the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner election is no surprise. It is no secret that senior Labour figures have been pushing for his nomination for some time, waiting for the right moment.

Lost purse returned

LAST Saturday I lost my purse – it could have been anywhere in Sheffield.

Wasted calls Having wasted thousands ending out all those letters, Labour now wastes more by ringing up households to do a questionnaire. Has anyone else had these calls? I can’t be the only one. I didn’t catch the name of the Labour representative because I wasn’t really interested, then I thought I would give her the benefit of the doubt and hear her out. She just wanted to ask which party I vote for, who I’d like to see in Government and who I vote for in the local elections. I had great pleasure in answering but what a waste of time and money. Having got the answers what good will it do, what can it possibly achieve? Labour stupidity. K Hammond

Figures take a spin

I would comment on an article appearing in The Star’s January Business Review supplement entitled ‘Robin Hood Airport flying high’.

Castle tourism bid

Following the article (Feb 2) on the possible demise of Sheffield Castle, I would like to express my support for the efforts being made, particularly by Ron Clayton, to safeguard the remains.

If world did nothing...

WHAT would happen if governments did nothing about this so-called recession? The whole world would be in trouble financially, but that would be trouble for all the rich people of the world.

Farewell to a dry so-and-so

Those who had the unique and fondly-remembered experience of working at that cross between Porton Down and The Navy Lark that was the Safety In Mines Research Establishment will be saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Thompson, a fondly remembered ex-colleague.

Vulnerable children

Sheffield Children’s NHS Services aims to offer an appointment to a young person and their family within six weeks of a referral. The reality is very different, with a wait of up to a year for children with significant mental health problems to see a specialist.

Facts on housing

I’d like to pick up on points raised from letters on the ballot over future management of the city’s council housing stock.

Why waste all this money?

HOW dare Michael Gove suggest that taxpayers pay for a new royal yacht for the Queen?

Housing decisions

PROF Tony Crook (Jan 24) pointed out the real facts that help tenants towards the decisions that will have to be made in the forthcoming ballot. But it makes sense in what Coun Harry Harpham stated as to why the council wants to take back control of housing.

Anger at charges

I AM disgusted by the council’s lack of insight, again wanting more money and deciding to charge in park car parks.

We should enjoy concession

If Mr Cormack (Jan 27) hoped to invoke a response to his comments, then he’s been successful. I hope this letter is one of many!

Appeal case was extremely weak

I read with incredulity that a gamekeeper convicted of seven offences under the wildlife and animal welfare acts appealed his conviction, claiming he was framed by RSPB investigators.

We should leave EU

WHY should the UK stump up £17.5 billion to prop up a falling, dying Euro?

Security will be paramount

THAT Josie Derrick (Jan 26) is no longer a Sheffield Homes board member could well explain why she appears to have had difficulty in understanding my letter.

Keep local firms in business

In these hard times it’s wonderful to see how small local businesses go out of their way to help a good cause, as when Paul and his family from Costello’s Flooring of Deepcar without hesitation supported Stocksbridge in Bloom by offering them a fantastic raffle prize.

Support Cameron

I am sick to the back teeth of reading snide comments from bitter little left-wing trolls that keep insisting David Cameron has no right to govern the UK.

Raise three points

I DIDN’T complete the questionnaire sent out by city council leader Julie Dore but would like to raise three points.

My bin half-empty

a measured Star editorial last year correctly concluded that, given the changes in waste and the scale of cuts required from councils, Sheffield council would need to review refuse collection arrangements.

Move to city centre

I WAS disappointed to hear that the lovely figures of the working steel men had been removed from inside Meadowhall to a car park.

Horrendous system

After just reading about no-show patients, I have to say that I blame the hospitals’ horrendous systems.

Is it necessary?

A READER asked why it needs five traffic wardens to patrol in a van in Sheffield. Well the incredible truth is there are three wardens with one supervisor. Why do they need a supervisor? And more amazing there is one police officer.

Truth over homes

I do not know where academics Dr Cathy Davis and Alan Wigfield, of Sheffield Hallam and Salford universities (Dec 20) get their information or who they represent but they are utterly wrong on two key points when urging tenants to vote to return council housing management to the city council.

Dump my rubbish at town hall

MY solution to the ludicrous idea of fortnightly collections is to dump my rubbish on the town hall steps. I urge others to do the same.

Safety and health

Has anyone in the council thought how the proposed fortnightly collection of black bins may concern the hundreds of people who share their bins? I think the answer is no.

Hast to be a creator

If they want to teach creationism alongside Darwinism at the Netherthorpe school, I think this would be fair and the state should support it.

HOW can the decision over bin collections have been taken so quickly? It is only some six days since the closure of the council facility for us to comment on which council services should be saved and which should be reduced or closed.

Football history made by goal

For the interest of the thousands of football fans in South Yorkshire, I wonder if they realised they were seeing football history made when Thierry Henry’s goal for Arsenal knocked Leeds United out of the FA Cup?
