Neglected statue

We are indeed fortunate in the 21st century to be able to express our views without being sent to prison for ‘disagreeing with the establishment’.

Windy supporters

I WAS sad but not surprised that MEP Godfrey Bloom is horrified at the further desecration of Yorkshire’s beautiful landscape and heritage by wind farms and calls them ‘beastly, useless monsters’.

Dave’s flagship pub

Colin Drury’s tribute to Dave Wickett understates the latter’s achievements.

Greedy, gambling

we should all be concerned over the increase in fraudulent benefit claims (May 18). However there is another side to this as the Audit Commission has said ‘the impact of the current economic climate is putting more pressure on individual finances and tempting people to committ fraud’.

A godless country

As is well known in recent months two ladies have been suspended from their positions for having the temerity to wear small crosses as a symbol of their Christian faith.

Profit comes first

Sheffield council is pressing ahead with plans to de-commission the last two intermediate care centres that provide re-enablement services to adults aged 65 and over who have recently had a stay in hospital and need help to regain their confidence to return home. They also act as assessment centres providing access to good quality care.

Memorial in a state

having attended the HMS Sheffield Memorial Ceremony at the cathedral for the last few years, along with my ex-husband, I was saddened by the forlorn state of the memorial in the cathedral forecourt.

Road to nowhere

I FEEL it is now time to put pen to paper as an angry resident and motorist of Hillsborough about this sham of a traffic system Sheffield City Council have enforced around Hillsborough.

Delays in benefits

I HAVE been extremely disappointed at the way in which those claiming housing benefit are being treated by the council’s benefits service.

Being village idiots

Having reached the age of 61 and having voted in every election since eligible I decided not to vote this time round as I could see no party which deserved my vote.

Flag down police

could the Chief Constable please have a word with some of his police officers to solve a problem which is constantly happening in Sheffield?

No limo necessary

In view of the overwhelming success in Doncaster to retain the elected mayor model, perhaps this is good time to look back to May 2001 when Doncaster Council Watch members Louella Chesterman, Joffre Sprakes, Dunlop Griffith and myself campaigned for the referendum which eventually brought about Martin Winter and, subsequently, Peter Davies as elected mayors.

Rights of motorists

The article ‘Excel gives drivers court warning’ (Apr 26) points out that Simon Renshaw-Smith, Excel’s Managing Director, is a member of the British Parking Associations (BPA’s) Approved Operator Scheme board.

Just more tin huts

how can there be plans for a new 50-acre Enterprise Zone at Sheffield’s Airport? The site was already an ‘Enterprise Zone’ under the last Tory government. This plan is to rip up the runway and turn it into yet another building site.

Is the Government joking?

WE send 84 councillors to the town hall, each representing the concerns of the people in their area. This is democracy.

Over-estimating their importance

I AM constantly surprised that holiday companies get the blame for school holidays price variations.

Bogey-man comes

I READ with amusement how councillors and other politicians are bleating that a mayor for Sheffield would be nothing short of the bogey-man coming to frighten the life out of us, that are on the outside of the closed doors of the Town Hall. The amusement turns into a good old belly laugh when the councillors say it would lead to a dictatorship.

Turning in graves

Elm Lane was a wartime fire station and, since the war, had one full time pump and occasionally between four and six Civil Defence appliances (Green Goddesses).

Eroding democracy

The erosion of local democracy by successive governments will be completed by the introduction of elected mayors.

Dog bin

Responsible owner

As a proud owner of a greyhound I have recently added a cross-bred puppy to the family home. Imagine my horror, as someone who always picks up their dog’s mess, when I read the article What A Load Of Rubbish (April 17).
