SOUTH and West Yorkshire’s branch of the Royal British Legion has its first woman chairman - former Women’s Royal Army Corps regular Christine Spencer.

Christine, aged 72, received the chain of office from outgoing chairman John Sayles, who retired as he now holds a national post.

A former PT instructor, Christine, who lives at Gleadless Common, left the army in 1960 and has been active with the Legion since 1990.

After being elected by the county members, she will now be in the office for the next three years.

Christine is well known in the county having carried out a lot of welfare work for former servicemen and women and also being active with the annual poppy appeals.

“It is an honour to be the first woman in the post and I was quite surprised to be elected,” she said. “My husband Peter was an army regular too and we’ve been on the fringes of the Legion’s work for the last 50 years.

“It will be a busy job as our branch is the largest one in England, stretching from Doncaster to Bradford and Halifax. I will be very busy attending many social functions and with my involvement with the cadet forces,” Christine added.
