Sports plans at school approved

EXTRA sports facilities have been given the go-ahead at the site of the former Wisewood School in Sheffield once demolition work is complete.

Sheffield Council’s west and north planning board approved proposals to create an artificial grass pitch, car park and soft landscaping on the site of former school buildings and the old yard.

Buildings to be demolished include the school’s library, which was only built a decade ago at a cost of £500,000.

The application was granted despite a small number of objections.

Five letters raised concern about the impact of noise and swearing from football matches the pitch, which will be open until 10pm each night.

The pitch will be added to the old school’s existing sports facilities, retained for use by the local community.

The planning board also granted permission for nine houses to be built at the old Stocksbridge Club and Institute car park, on Haywood Lane, Stocksbridge. The club building will be retained.

But plans for a block of five flats at the junction of Barnsley Road and Idsworth Road, Fir Vale, on a site which is currently garages, were refused permission by councillors after objections from dozens of neighbours.

There were two petitions, signed by a total of 46 people, opposing the scheme on the grounds of extra vehicle congestion, more on-street parking and that the design of the building would not be in keeping with the surrounding area.
