Prep school bosses hope it’s third time lucky

BOSSES of a Sheffield prep school are hoping it will be third time lucky for their plans to rebuild the nursery and reception block.

Mylnhurst School on Button Lane, Banner Cross, has redesigned its plans three times to try to take into account concerns from surrounding residents.

The initial proposals, which would have meant the new nursery being built on an alternative area of the school site, received 48 letters of support but 39 objections, because people living nearby opposed plans for a new access road from Woodholm Road, loss of trees and the ‘severe impact’ of the building on adjoining bungalows.

When the school came up with a second proposal there were 15 objections because the new nursery would still overlook neighbouring houses and it would take up 30 parking spaces, meaning cars wouild have to be parked on surrounding streets.

Management went back to the drawing board a third time, proposing the nursery on the site of the existing building – although it still received 13 objections because of proximity to bungalows and because it is 36 per cent bigger than the nursery that is there.

Two petitions have been sent to the council objecting about a potential increase in parked cars outside the school site and ‘overdevelopment’.

But Sheffield Council planning officers are recommending the new scheme is approved when it is discussed by the city centre, south and east planning board on Monday.

Planning officers said impact on surrounding residents would be ‘acceptable’ with a fence and hedgerow screening the nursery building, and that trees on site would be unaffected.

Officials added that while there are parking problems around the school, the new nursery would create ‘very little additional traffic’.
