Pointing way to greener future

STUDENTS and building firms will be able to learn about the latest eco-friendly construction techniques by visiting a £4.5 million centre launched at a South Yorkshire college.
The Think Low Carbon centre, at Barnsley College’s Honeywell site, will provide sessions for about 100 people every month, showcasing renewable energy and energy-efficient buildings.
Wendy Bussey, centre manager, said the centre would not only show new ideas, but also how traditional ones can be adapted for modern buildings, such as using sheep’s wool insulation and straw bales for building material.
Among the technology on show is a wood-burning boiler, plus solar panels on the roof to generate electricity and an air-source heat pump, generating some under-floor heating.
Toilets at the centre are flushed using rainwater.
Frank Johnston, chairman of governors at Barnsley College, said: “Construction is key sector for new ‘green’ jobs.”
Some 150 people attended the opening, including architect and TV presenter George Clarke and Government representatives.
