Frustration over festival advertising
FRUSTRated community group members have complained after Sheffield Council refused to let them advertise their annual festival on traffic islands around their neighbourhood.
Greenhill and Bradway Tenants’ and Residents’ Association wanted to put up banners on roundabouts ahead of the Lowedges Festival in the summer after they saw that adverts had been put up on traffic islands last year for events sponsored by the city council.
But secretary Stephen Rich said: “We were told the council are the only people that are allowed to advertise on grass verges and traffic islands.
“We at the Lowedges Festival have asked repeatedly if we can pay to put up signs on these islands and been told no, we have also asked if we can put them on other park entrances and told no.
“Organisers of festivals in Millhouses, Graves and Norfolk Parks are allowed to do so.”
A Sheffield Council spokesman said: “We understand the concerns that people have about who is and who isn’t allowed to advertise on traffic roundabouts.
“Currently, health and safety requirements mean that only Sheffield Council workers, or approved contractors, are allowed on to them.
“However, we are looking at ways of helping groups and businesses which may want to use these sites.”
He added any organisations that are hosting an event in a park can display their banners on the park’s railings.
To do this they need to contact the relevant parks manager, based at Meersbrook Park.
