City MP backs renewable energy scheme

A COMPANY set up in Sheffield to generate electricity from renewable sources has been backed by city MP Meg Munn.

The Labour politician, who represents Heeley ward, has met representatives of Sheffield Renewables, based in Alexandra Road, Heeley, which is working on hydro-electricity generation schemes on the River Don at Jordan Dam, near Meadowhall, and Kelham Island.

Ms Munn met part-time staff member Cariad Cooke who explained the company’s hydro-electric projects in Jordan Dam and Kelham Island.

The Jordan Dam scheme has already been granted planning permission and will generate around 310,000 kWh of electricity per year. That will power around 80 typical family homes - providing a saving of around 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Now that planning permission has been secured, Sheffield Renewables is gathering the funds necessary to begin the installation work on the project.

The company aims to raise £250,000 towards the scheme through a community share offer to be launched in the autumn.

Ms Munn said: “The new projects at Sheffield Renewables are a fine example of how local businesses are beginning to make a real impact on our environment.

The politician added: “The dedication and enthusiasm of the Sheffield Renewables team is inspiring to see and I give them all my full support.”

Perhaps the headline should read "Labour MP backs barking mad scheme with no money that will power 80 homes at a cost of £1,000 a year per home and tax payer subsidy on top". What planet are these wretched MPs on? The economics of this scheme are crazy. Oh yeah, of course it's Labournomics not economics. Sheffield Renewables live on tax payers money. they are not a business by any stretch of the twisted Labour imagination.
