The official opening of South Street Park in Sheffield. Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Dr Sylvia Dunkley and Paul Blomfield MP officially open the park

HUNDREDS of people gathered for a party in a Sheffield park which has reopened after undergoing an £800,000 revamp.

Work has taken place at Sheaf Valley Park, above the rail station, to create the UK’s first city centre ampitheatre, plant new trees and create a range of footpaths.

The ampitheatre is set to be used by performing groups and as part of events such as Sheffield Children’s Festival and could also feature as a venue for the Tramlines live music weekend.

Lord Mayor, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, who cut the ribbon to reopen the park with Sheffield Central Labour MP, Paul Blomfield, said: “I would like to praise local residents who are on the Friends of Sheaf Valley Park for their vision which led to this project.

“We now have a really pleasant area for people to visit and to hold events.

“It is really sad, however, that former council leader Jan Wilson, who represented the area and was one of the driving forces behind the project, is no longer with us to see it completed.”

Mr Blomfield added: “It’s a fantastic addition to the city centre and has stunning views.”

Simon Ogden, Sheffield Council’s city centre development manager who has organised the revamp project, was also present.

He said: “It’s been seven years in the making.”

One of the friends group, Mike Wild, of Skye Edge, said: “It looks brilliant and I am sure the ampitheatre will be very popular. As well as big events, we want it to be accessible for community groups.”

The ampitheatre has been carved out of the hillside, which was previously rough grass blighted by problems including litter.

The opening event was attended by a huge number of residents and other members of the public.

After the ceremony, there were performances by groups including young dancers and majorettes. There are future plans to extend the redeveloped park across the hillside.

Perhaps they could spend some money on Bingham Park and restore the tennis courts to their former glory.

Just a thought ,how can it be a "relaunch" or even a "revamp" when it was just a few pleasant trees and untended grass before the £800K was spent on it?

Can't help but worry what it will look like without some continuous ground maintenance, to say nothing of a dollop of tender loving care....Hope SCC has got some cash for this included in the budget.

It looks unfinished, when you look at if the bus stop in front of the station, like a circle with the top missing. I need to get me some yellow spray paint and add the finishing touches so it looks like a smiley face!

Perhaps this area could be used to enable Sheffield to join some of the presitige events other major cities participate in - for example the BBC 'Last Night of the Proms' big park gatherings.
