PUNTERS at a Sheffield dog track have helped in raising a staggering £24,000 for charities this summer.
Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, just off Penistone Road, has raised donations for Ella’s Fund, Help for Heroes, the Army Benevolent Fund, the Master Cutler’s Challenge, Weston Park Hospital and the Retired Greyhound Fund.
Managing director John Gilburn said: “We are proud to support a range of very worthy, local charities.
“Our fundraising package has been designed to help charities and community groups raise as much money as possible for their individual causes while enjoying a night at the dogs.”
John added: “In 2010 we raised over £80,000 for various causes, and we are hoping to at least match that amount this year.”
Alan Lyons, investor development manager at Creative Sheffield, and Kevin Parkin, chairman of Parkin Ltd, co-founded the networking group Lyons Den.
The group brings together businesses and individuals from many sectors across Sheffield, and hosted an event at the stadium earlier this summer in aid of the Master Cutler’s Challenge.
Alan said: “Owlerton is an ideal venue for a fundraising event. Over 150 professionals from across Yorkshire joined us at the stadium and helped us to raise £4,000.
“The funds raised will be used to improve the employment prospects of 1,000 young people in the Sheffield region – something everyone involved in the event can be very proud about.”
