Consultation set to finish

THE public consultation period on cost-cutting proposals put forward by the county’s fire service ends on Monday.

Fire chiefs who have to save £4.7 million by April 2013, because of Government funding cuts, are suggesting closing some fire stations, opening new ones, reducing the number of fire engines operating in the county and changing some shifts.

Mansfield Road and Darnall fire stations are earmarked for closure in Sheffield and, if plans get the go-ahead, a new station would be built to cover their areas.

Bosses also want to close the retained fire station at Mosborough and replace it with a full time station in Birley.

The retained fire station in Royston, Barnsley, could also go under the plans and Edlington fire station would lose its part-time firefighters.
