Cathedral wins order

SHEFFIELD Cathedral has been granted possession of its forecourt - meaning that the Occupy Sheffield protest must leave by a deadline on Monday.

Sheffield County Court granted the possession order effective from 4pm on Monday, February 13.

The cathedral took legal action to clear the protest, which set up camp on the forecourt in November, to vacate the forecourt ahead of a development project.

The protest camp has previously said on Twitter it was ‘closing down’ camp today.

A Cathedral statement said: “The Cathedral understands that Occupy Sheffield intends to vacate the area over the weekend and is relieved that plans in place for the forecourt and the long awaited development can now progress.

“We will continue to liaise with Occupy Sheffield.

“Sheffield Cathedral is committed to its ongoing work with the homeless and vulnerable of Sheffield, and to promoting social and economic justice.”

The Dean of Sheffield Rev Peter Bradley is expected to speak after the 4pm deadline on Monday.

The Occupy Sheffield movement set up outside the cathedral on November 5 and said it was staging a demonstration over the economic system, corporate greed and funding cuts.

Campaigners also took possession of the former Salvation Army Citadel on Cross Burgess Street before agreeing with landlords to leave.

Cathedral clergy repeatedly asked the camp to leave and after legal action was taken a trial was set to take place later this month.

A camp Twitter update said on Thursday: “This evening’s GA (general assembly) agreed that the camp will be closing down this Saturday.

“The citadel will be used for storage but remains non-residential.”

#2 have you been inside the Cathedral recently? Have you seen the numbers of homeless and vulnerable who frequently can be found there....to say nothing of the Cathedral's Archer project. Excessive greed will only be defeated through the ballot box by a political grouping less in awe of the Bankers than of the electorate!

I saw them marching down The Moor, being led by a man in a dress, closely followed by a group of bongo players all dressed in pink.

"Sheffield Cathedral is committed to its ongoing work with the homeless and vulnerable of Sheffield" - as long as they stay out of sight! Hypocritical so-called Christians.
