BETTY Sharpe didn’t ask for gifts when she reached the big 80.

Instead, she requested presence rather than presents from the many friends and relatives at her milestone birthday party at the Village Restaurant Brunswick Gardens Retirement Village in Woodhouse.

Big-hearted Betty, who lives in Brunswick Gardens, said that, if they wished, her guests could make a donation to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The cash raised was doubled thanks to a donation from insurance firm Aviva, her son David’s employer.

Because her party was arranged by David and his colleague Janice Wright, they each received £250 from Aviva to donate to charity, bringing the total raised to £1,020.
