£1.3m makeover for a Victorian classic
A VICTORIAN Sheffield school which has served the community for 130 years is ready to last another century following the completion of a £1.3 million refurbishment programme.
Hillsborough’s former Burton Street Primary has been home to the Burton Street Foundation for 13 years.
It is a community centre used by 2,000 people every week.
A full-scale spruce-up over the last 15 months has seen the roof replaced, windows double glazed, a new heating system installed, gutters replaced, the premises redecorated and new toilets and disabled showers put in.
The centre also now has a new cafe and car park.
A party was held to mark the completion of the project, which was funded by the Charity Bank and the Community Builders’ Programme.
Managing director Dave Clarson said the foundation had bought the building from the council in 2004.
The aim had been to make it a permanent part of the community.
“We have carried out a lot of work that will hopefully last for a long, long time,” he said.
“We’ve upgraded the whole place from top to bottom but have tried to keep the original Victorian feel of the place as far as possible.
“In the week we are a centre that supports around 180 people with learning and physical disabilities.
“But at the weekend we are host to a range of organisations, such as clog dancers and a karate club,” said Mr Clarson.
“We wanted to stage an official opening to say a big thank you to the people who have helped us, such as our builders Watfords of Wombwell, and our architects Burnell Briercliffe.”

Friday, June 24, 2011 at 06:29 AMSheffield Council should look into why it is that this fine building has lasted so long and will do for another century if maintained as their way of thinking is that new builds these days only have a 20 year life expectancy which was quoted by them with regards to the £63 million pound black hole being created in the guise of the Moor Market.It is a pity that so many of our old building that were built to last have ben demolished to construct inferior quality buildings at great expence to the taxpayer.
