Seventies paradise was no way bleak
THE Reel Monty was released this week.
That's the film featuring the 'City On The Move' propaganda spot that kicks off the film The Full Monty.
It's so dated and upbeat you think it has to be a spoof.
So much of our popular conception of
the early 70s is that it was a pretty bleak and uncomfortable time.
Rubbish.
OK there were a lot of rusty cars and bad haircuts around but everybody who wanted a job could get one, beer was 15p a pint, girls wore hot pants and halter-neck dresses, blokes wore clunky shoes and baggy trousers.
There were no computers, mobile phones or reality TV.
We had books, phone boxes and The Banana splits.
Pubs and clubs were full most nights, you could always find somewhere to park, motorways NEVER got blocked, jammed or slow, summers were hot and winters were cold.
Paradise.
It was the dismantling of that way of life that caused all the bleakness and despair - and we know who to blame for that.
