PUBLIC transport?
Do me a favour.
Twice in a day I was reminded why trains and buses are not the answer to our transport problems in their current incarnation.
First I wanted to catch a train from Sheffield to Worksop and come back the next day.
Not a particularly taxing request you wouldn't think.
But the conductor told me I couldn't do that. I either had to come back on the same day or pay twice. I ended up paying twice. Two lots of £4.60 instead of one return fare at £5.
That's effectively a £9.20 return to go 18 miles and back. Scandalous.
Secondly, a 14-year-old boy gets on a bus at 8am and is asked how old he is – he's 6ft 2ins so the driver is curious.
He tells him his age and the driver says with great relish: "There are no half fares before 9am anyway".
Is this the way to get us back on public transport?
